Windsor First Aid and Food Safety

When looking for high quality food safety training in Windsor, Windsor First Aid is one of the best choices you can make. We not only tailor our courses for food handlers, but also anyone interested in food safety. Any one who cooks or prepared food should at least have basic knowledge about food safety and sanitation – that includes people who just cook for themselves and their families.

In Windsor, all facilities where food is prepared and either sold or served (regardless of charge) are governed by health laws on food safety. That means all their staff has to be trained in at least basic food safety and sanitation, with a certified employee on duty at all times during business hours. The certified employee has to be trained in a facility chosen by the Windsor local health authorities. Windsor First Aid happens to be one of those facilities who work closely with the health authorities.

Food safety and sanitation at Windsor First Aid

Food safety and sanitation training offered at Windsor First Aid is available in two levels, the basic and advanced courses. The food safety training courses we offer our trainees are focused on teach students about concepts and skills involved food safety and sanitation. The course tackles topics such as:

  • Basic bacteriology
  • Pathogenesis of foodborne illness
  • Housekeeping and sanitation
  • Staff hygiene and health
  • Work flow and facility management

The basic course is open to anyone interest in food safety, not just people working in food facilities. The advanced course can be taken by anyone with a basic food safety training credential, but is primarily targeted towards managerial staff.

Self-study

We give our students the option of studying by themselves, which is ideal for students who work or still go to school. This allows them to learn food safety at their own pace and during their available free time. They simply buy the workbook we give students in the full course, as well as sign up for a certification exam at their desired schedule.

Certificates

When you sign up for training, certificates will be awarded to you as soon as you pass the certification exam. The exam is usually given at a separate day from the full training course – this allows students to squeeze in a little more studying before the test. Once you pass the exam with at least 80 percent, you will be awarded with a training certificate valid for five years.

Food poisoning and salmonella

Foodborne illnesses are typically known as food poisonings – however they are far from that. An FBI is typically viral or bacterial, caused by the ingestion of contaminated food. When the bacteria or virus infects the victim, he or she starts to experience (majority) gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea. Stomach cramps are quite common as well.

Salmonella is one of the microorganisms typically found in raw meat and poultry (and dairy products) that infect humans. Because salmonella is transmitted by an oral-fecal route, it is commonly found in raw meat – the contamination happens when the animal is butchered.
