Food Safe Training in Victoria

Why learn about Food Safe Training in Victoria?

The most important thing Victoria First Aid teaches all its trainees is how food safety and Food Safe Training in Victoria, though may seem unimportant at first, has a big impact on health of society. Food is a collective need, and a product that will always be in demand. Because of this, food products are typically produced in large quantities – and if handled improperly can cause widespread foodborne disease among consumers.

Foodborne illness causes gastrointestinal problems, usually manifesting as diarrhea. Diarrhea can be simply managed at home, however, if it persists and the symptoms get worse, can be fatal. It is especially dangerous to very young and very old victims. The severe loss of water and electrolytes can cause death in infants, because their bodies are largely made up of water. Similarly, older adults have less water in their bodies, making them prone to dehydration.

What is FOODSAFE?

The term FOODSAFE is used for all food safety training programs in Victoria, British Columbia. It was a program that was created by the Health Authorities in order to set standards for food safety among all food establishments in the province. The public health act on Food Premises Regulation requires all food establishments (from restaurants to groceries) to have at least one employee trained in food safety  on duty during every shift. The employee can either be a first-line service worker or part of the management staff.

FOODSAFE is offered in two levels, the first level ($110) for food handlers and the second for management staff. Because the first level is targeted towards service workers who directly handle food products, that level is largely skill-oriented. The second level ($165) targets management, so the level is planning-oriented. However, both levels still focus on the concepts of food safety in storage, preparation, service, and sanitation.

Your FOODSAFE certificate.

All students who complete either levels of FOODSAFE training are awarded with a training certificate. The certificate for food safety training has to be renewed every five years through a refresher class. The class is short, lasting only three hours. Refreshers update the students on new food safety skills, concepts, and laws/regulations, focusing on the FOODSAFE essentials. After the refresher, students have to take and pass an exam with a grade of at least 80 percent to get their new certificate.

Training modalities.

We offer three ways to study FOODSAFE: (1) classroom, (2) virtual classroom online, and (3) by correspondence. The classroom set up is ideal because the learning process occurs face-to-face, in an organized environment (the training facility of Victoria First Aid). Virtual classes are also available online. This kind of training is ideal for students who cannot leave the house due to personal responsibilities, or are too far away from the training centers.

Similarly, students who are working can take the FOODSAFE class by correspondence ($85). This is ideal for working students because they do not have to meet strict schedules and deadlines. The course is finished at their own pace, as long as the student doesn’t extend beyond six months. A two month extension is possible by paying an additional $25.
