Food Safety Courses in Surrey, B.C.
Why there is a need for Food Safety Courses in Surrey? Surrey First Aid is known as one of the highest quality training providers in British Columbia. We offer two levels of FOODSAFE training, as well as refresher courses. Food safety is a big deal in the city, because FOODSAFE training is mandated by a Public Health Act in British Columbia. For every food establishment in Surrey, every shift must have a FOODSAFE trained employee on duty, either first-line (servers, cooks) or management staff (managers, executive chefs). Studying FOODSAFE and getting certified
Food safety training programs are collectively known as FOODSAFE in British Columbia. The FOODSAFE program is funded by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development and was created in order to spread awareness on foodborne illness and the importance of food safety and sanitation. The training program is also a certification program, meaning all students are awarded FOODSAFE training certificates upon completion.
FOODSAFE certificates are valid for five years, after which they expire. However, workers can get a new certificate valid for another five years without taking the FOODSAFE program again – and that is through a refresher class. Refresher classes focus on the essentials of level 1 FOODSAFE training, perfect for food service workers who either need to update their training or/and get a new certificate.
FOODSAFE levels
- Level 1 training is ideally targeted towards food service workers who handle food directly, workers such as cooks, bussers, and servers. The level teaches basic skills and principles in proper food handling (storage, preparation, service, and sanitation). It is 8 hours long and costs $110.
- Level 2 training is not mandated by the Public Health Act but is highly encouraged for management staff. To take this level of FOODSAFE training, the student has to complete level 1 first. The course focuses on management and planning capabilities that the administrative staff of the establishment should have, specifically towards food and work safety. It is 12 hours long.
- Refresher courses are 3 hours long.
All of the FOODSAFE courses can be taken in a classroom set up or through the internet via a virtual classroom. Another popular choice among students who are working is training by correspondence. This is preferred because there are no final schedules and deadlines – everything is done at your own pace as long as you finish FOODSAFE training in 6 months. This kind of training costs $85, with a two month extension available at an additional $25.
