Why there is a need for Food Safety Training in Saskatoon? In Saskatchewan, food facilities are required to have employees trained in food safety and sanitation present at all times. This is specified by The Food Safety Regulations, part of the 1994 Public Health Act. The act then further states that the facilities are responsible for training the rest of the staff in safe food handling. The number of staff trained in food safety varies, depending on the Public Health Inspector tasked with granting a specific facility with a health permit. Usually, facilities that handle high-risk food or are operating in a high-risk environment, need more employees trained and certified.

FoodSafe: Food safety and sanitation
Food safety training is one of Saskatoon First Aid’s most popular courses. There are two levels of training, under the main program called FoodSafe. FoodSafe training focuses on teaching students about safe food handling and sanitation. The difference between the two levels is simple – the first is basic and the second is advanced. First level training is a basic program that introduces different food safety concepts to students. Second level training is an advanced program that focuses on management – perfect for supervisory staff tasked with management of the food establishment.
Saskatoon First Aid is not strict about student requirements, meaning if you are interested in training in food safety, you can simply apply to the program you want – you don’t need to be working in food service or own a food facility. However, to sign up for advanced FoodSafe 2 training, you first need to complete and pass FoodSafe 1.
Training credentials from Saskatoon First Aid are valid all over Saskatoon and Saskatchewan, in accordance with the public health act.

Food safety: Personal Hygiene and Workplace Sanitation
Beyond safe food used in production, food service workers have to practice good personal hygiene and housekeeping in order to decrease or eliminate the risk of food contamination. Food service workers are typically the source of dangerous microorganisms when they fail to practice proper hygiene. If they carry a microorganisms and do not wash their hands or wear protective gear, they can transfer the pathogen to the food they are preparing. This is usually the case if the worker is sick or comes in contact with a sick individual.
Workplace sanitation is brought about with proper housekeeping. Cleaning the workplace should be practiced before, during, and after food preparation, especially between handling raw and cooked food. Utensils, work surfaces, storage facilities, and serving areas should likewise be kept well-maintained and clean.
